Explorer Program

General funding for Explorer Program which provides special training for young people, ages 14 to 20.  Explorers are assigned to area police stations and provide thousands of community-service hours around the City.  Funding covers expenses such as the Explorer Academy, educational and cultural field trips and travel to competitions.

Provided boxing equipment for new members of the Police Athletic League, which is a youth crime prevention program that relies on athletic and other recreational activities to cement a bond between police officers and community youth.  Funded from a designated bequest.

Eight week “boot camp” program for at-risk youth that offers a youth component and a parent component.  Parents attend mandatory parenting classes while the youth participate in physical training, military-style drills and team building activities, as well as group counseling and mentoring.

Provided travel expenses for representatives of South Bureau to meet with New Jersey State and local officials to learn more about the program Operation Cease Fire New Jersey implemented in Newark to reduce gang violence.

Los Angeles Police Academy Magnet Schools

Scholarships for graduating seniors interested in careers in law enforcement to pursue higher education.  Funding for the scholarships comes from the Lori Gonzalez Scholarship Fund, established in memory of the granddaughter of former police chief Bernard Parks and the Christy Lynn Hamilton Memorial Scholarship Fund, established in memory of an LAPD officer who was slain in the line of duty. 

Los Angeles Community College District
Ongoing since 2004

To prepare the youth of today for careers in law enforcement, scholarships are awarded to selected students who are majoring in Administration of Justice.  Funding comes from the Lori Gonzalez Scholarship Fund and from designated gifts.
