Los Angeles Police Foundation Receives Charity Navigator’s Highest 4-Star Rating

The Police Foundation earned a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the nation's largest and most-utilized evaluator of charities, for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances.

"We are very pleased to receive this high rating. This “exceptional” designation comes at a time when the recession has delivered a blow to thousands of charities across the nation. Donors are demanding more transparency and proven results from the organizations they choose to support,” said Karen Wagener, president of the Police Foundation.  “This four star rating differentiates Los Angeles Police Foundation from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
Only one quarter of the charities that Charity Navigator evaluates receives their highest rating, indicating that the Los Angeles Police Foundation executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America.

Charities are evaluated on two broad areas of financial health - their organizational efficiency and their organizational capacity. Ratings are based on the financial information provided on IRS Forms 990. Charity Navigator uses that information to analyze a charity's financial performance in seven key categories: program expenses, administrative expenses, fundraising expenses, fundraising efficiency, primary revenue growth, program expenses growth and working capital ratio.

During fiscal year 2008, the Police Foundation spent $2,460,838 of its budget on program expenses, $78,518 on administration, and $47,095 on fundraising.

Every day the job of the Los Angeles Police Department gets larger, tougher, more complex and more dangerous, and as a result, more expensive. Modern policing requires a high level of sophistication in officer training and safety, communications, technology and community outreach.

With 96% of the LAPD’s budget spent on personnel, there is little left for major projects that will enhance efficiency and modernization of the department. The city is stretched to a deficit and federal government grants to local law enforcement are shrinking.

Thanks to our supporters, donors and members, the Los Angeles Police Foundation has donated over $12 million to LAPD projects, programs and training that benefit our communities and help make our city a safer place to live, work and play.
